If you are in Crystal CIty, VA check out my "Luminous" Exhibition at 2231 Crystal Drive at Vornado/Charles E. Smith. It's open to the public during business hours. The exhibition runs through April 30, 2012. Luminous is part of the Crystal City BID’s ARTFUL program. "The "Luminous" exhibition builds on the success of previous Crystal Art projects which have demonstrated the power that art can add to public spaces. Luminous is located on the recently renovated ground floor public concourse of 2231 Crystal Drive adding exceptional color to a beautiful new space."

A group exhibition that explores attributes of innovation is now open in Dowd Gallery at SUNY Cortland, New York.

“Innovations,” featuring the work of 17 artists, samples the latest technological developments and attitudes in the contemporary art scene. These include installation, video, painting, printmaking, drawing and sculpture. Selected artists from across the U.S. contributed to the exhibition.

The 17 artists include: Rachel B. Abrams, Colin Blakely, Jessica Gondek, Patti Jordan, Scott Ludwig, So Yoon Lym, Scott McCarney, Anne Marchand, Mazure, Lori Miles, Rebecca Mushtare, Scott Oldfield, Sheridan, Kathleen Thum, Jake Winiski, Biying Zhang and Zelda Zinn.

Today we installed this painting in the home of a private collector in DC who is thrilled to own it. Even though it is a small work, it was important to find the right placement for it. It is now showing on an easel in the library with an arrangement of objets d'art from around the world. This piece is from the Stellar Series, a body of small works begun in 2009 reflecting patterns of energy from space.

We still have a few of the small paintings in DC and also in New York at Art2Gift, through Raandesk Gallery.

Porter Contemporary announces Splash!, a group exhibition of thirteen artists in various mediums focusing on color. Porter Contemporary invites everyone to come in their most impressive colors and make their own splash! We invite you to dress in your boldest colors, wear colorful masks in true Halloween spirit, and enjoy the emotionally stirring effects of our colorful show.

From ancient Greek philosophers devising connotative meanings to different colors, to color theory principles found in Leonardo da Vince’s notebooks, and Isaac Newton’s theory of colors in the 18th century -- the energizing flow of light transcends time and continues to delight its viewers. Amazingly, humans perceive over 2.8 million different hues. We invite you to let your eyes roam free following the emotionally stirring effects of our colorful show.

The exhibition focuses on thirteen artists’ ideas about color and how it manifests itself in the work. Artworks range in medium and include: photography, wood, watercolors, acrylics, oil, ceramics and other mixed medium items.

Anne Marchand will give a short talk about her work in the exhibition, Of Shining Worlds: Recent Paintings by Anne Marchand, curated by Claudia Rousseau. Artist Tom Block, scholar of medieval literature, will do a reading of poems by Rumi, the great early thirteenth century Persian mystical poet. The poems have been selected for their relevance to the cosmic iconography of Anne Marchand's paintings. Maurice Sedacca, a musician and composer from New York, will play a prelude and will play between the poems. He will play accompanying music on the the guitar and the oud, a middle eastern instrument that is the forerunner of the lute. http://insidemc.montgomerycollege.edu/showStory.php?id=29678

Studio Visit Magazine Volume is online

This has been a big year for publications! This spring, Studio Visit Magazine published my work in Volume 14. The painting "Unity" was selected for inclusion by juror, Beth Venn, Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art and Senior Curator of the department of American Art at the Newark Museum. This painting will also be featured in my upcoming solo at Montgomery College, Of Shining Worlds: Recent Paintings by Anne Marchand with a reception planned for Sept, 22, 2011.

ZARTiculation, at Chevy Chase Pavilion, April 2-July 3, will be on display throughout the Pavilion and in Zenith’s own gallery on level 2 next to Embassy Suites Hotel. To kick off the exhibit, Zenith will host an “Open House” on Saturday, April 2 from 1:00-5:00 PM, with some of the artists present, and on Wednesday, May 18, the gallery will host a “Meet the Artists Reception” from 6:00-8:30 PM.

New with this exhibition, Zenith will host a series of art classes, lectures and demonstrations several Saturdays a month, conducted by some of the participating artists. Sponsored by the non-profit Zenith Community Arts Foundation, the classes will be held in Zenith’s gallery, with times and dates to be posted at www.zenithgallery.com. Scheduled, to date, are a “Soft Sculptures” class with Chris Malone for adults and children on Sunday, April 30 and two “Golden Artist Colors Lecture Demonstrations” for adults, conducted by painter Rosetta D’Berardinis on Saturdays, April 23 and May 14. These classes will be from 1:00-3:00 PM, followed by a “Meet and Greet the Artist” from 3:00-5:00 PM. Also in the works will be a sculpture class with Carol Newmyer, a collage and encaustic class with Marcie Wolf-Hubbard and a presentation by Margery Goldberg on art collecting.

The Washington Design Center announces the 2011 DreamHome, which will incorporate the jewelry of eight local jewelers and designers. The Year 2010 was an exciting year filled with new exhibitions, travel, new people, and new ideas. Some highlights include exhibiting in Transformer's Auction Benefit @ the Mexican Cultural Institute, Raandesk Gallery's, Art & Living: Emerging Interiors in New York City, the Long View Gallery's Informed Design exhibition, Amnesty International Human Rights Art Festival and Ridderhof Martin Gallery's Mid Atlantic New Painting Exhibition. It was wonderful working with the venues and professional staff that make art life go smoothly. Thanks to everyone who helped promote the events and exhibitions that made this a successful year! Special thanks to curator, Sharon Burton of Authentic Art Consulting for featuring my work in the Millennium Arts Salon's, Ten Artists for Ten Years exhibition which was on view at the Charles Sumner School & Museum Archives in Washington, DC.

I'm especially excited to hear news from artist friends of their upcoming exhibitions in 2011. I have art exhibitions planned for the year which I will be sharing with you in future posts. A new book which features Mid Atlantic Artists is about to be released this spring. Check back for more details.

Now in its sixth year, the Food Glorious Food art show and associated 2011 Calendar will be unveiled by the Zenith Community Arts Foundation (ZCAF) at Chevy Chase Pavilion on Wednesday, December 1 at a Calendar Launch Celebration & Silent Auction on the Terrace Level at Embassy Suites Hotel, from 6:30-9:30pm. This year’s theme, Sustainable & Scrumptious, was selected to create greater awareness of the environment and promote healthy, sustainable dining. Proceeds will benefit the Capital Area Food Bank, and WUSA 9 News Anchor Andrea Roane will serve as the evening’s emcee.

Cooked up by ZCAF Founder and Executive Director, Margery E. Goldberg in 2005, Food Glorious Food’s menu of food, art and charity is a recipe for success that has raised more than $115,000 for the food bank in five years, while pleasing the palates of art patrons and foodies through a unique collaboration between artists and restaurants. Area businesses add spice to the mix by sponsoring the calendar and donating items for the auction. The overall project raises money through calendar sales, a percentage of proceeds from a related month-long food art exhibition and the Calendar Launch & Silent Auction.

Recent acquisitions to the ART2Gift® Collection by Featured Artists:

Jennie Barrese, Photography- Barrese's black and white photography is reminiscent of her daily emotional state, deeply embedded in her subconscious. Her color photographs are also a reflection of this kind of emotion, but involve more reactions to her thoughts.

Jihay Kang, Painting & Mixed Media- Kang's acrylic on canvas work consists of iconic images merged together, creating an almost optical illusionary picture surrounding messages of eternal growth.

Andrew Maglathlin, Sculpture- Maglathlin uses ceramics to create abstract forms in a variety of different shapes, all resembling figures and objects that have inspired him throughout his lifetime. For ART2Gift he offers a selection of teapots that are not merely decorative but useful as well.

Anne Marchand, Painting- Marchand will be featuring her latest abstract paintings in acrylic on canvas. Her work is a highly textured, rhythmic expression of universal songs.

Jennifer Murray, Drawing and Mixed Media- Known for her charcoal drawings of people and wild animals in displaced settings. Murray plays around with her muse, the wolf, in a variety of mixed media work and small sculptures. Each work is a reflection of her own personal feelings, as well as her struggles and desires common to all people.

The abstract paintings and sculpture of Anne Marchand and Craig Schaffer are well paired in this exhibition with their graceful swirls and rhythms. Yet, they differ in their genesis. Marchand paints universal rhythms as joyous expressions of life, contrasting luminous depth and surface richness. Her work is inspired by mystical poetry and space exploration. Schaffer creates dynamic sculptural pieces inspired by science and nature. In this series, his work is based on fractal forms … shapes repeating at different scales created by the ongoing processes of life, such as the branching of plants to catch the sun.

Be sure to come see the new Windows into DC, Phase II, on M Street @ Walter E. Washington Convention Center in Washington, DC. It's a pop-up arts project in vacant retail windows at the convention center. My work from the Playground Series was part of the initial launch of the program last year. New work by area artists will be on display over a period of months to attract tourists, visitors and community members to the area. You can dial in to hear the artists talk about the work that they are exhibiting so bring your cell phones! Hosted by the DC Commission on Arts and Humanities (DCCAH) and the Washington E. Convention Center. The Arts on N Street Festival is free of charge and features art by local artists, music, fashion and local businesses. This initiative provides free spaces for artists and organizations to showcase and sell their goods, while also offering District citizens free and public art. Last Week to Experience “Informed Design” at Long View Gallery / Borderstan

Two DC-based architects were given the same challenge: Create a space that illustrates the significant relationship between art, architecture and design. After only five weeks of preparation, architects Ernesto Santalla and David Jameson installed two unique architectural design vignettes at Long View Gallery for its current exhibition, “Informed Design.” The architects also chose artists to work with and then incorporated their pieces into the vignettes.

Gallery Director, Drew Porterfield chose the work of artists Joan Konkel, Steve Griffin, Patricia Burns, Victoria Cowles, Susan Finsen, Anne Marchand and Wanda Wainsten to be featured in this exhibition.

It's a great resource for finding public art, www.murallocator.org. They've been online since January and growing rapidly.
If you are a public artist, you can add a link to your mural.

Check out my mural, Community in the Westminster Playground in Shaw, with a link on www.murallocator.org. home page. It was created in 2002 with funds from the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities, DC Creates Public Art.

I'm fascinated with gray as a foil and the way space and color create movement. This painting came about with lots of experimentation. I layered one acrylic film over the calligraphy in top left and love the transparent reveal what's hidden underneath.

Today, I visited the Long View Gallery with producer and artist Tom Block who snapped this picture of me with my work at the Informed Design Exhibition. I am thrilled to be exhibiting in this downtown Washington, DC venue which is also a fabulous 5,000 Sq Ft historic warehouse event space with 400 person capacity and 20 foot ceilings!

Long View Gallery is adjacent to the Walter E. Washington Convention Center. The owner moved to the new space earlier this year and it may well prove to be the premiere venue for showing contemporary art in DC. Visitors, art lovers, designers, architects, collectors and artists are thrilled to view artwork in the spacious gallery showrooms. Long View Gallery is a short walk from the Mt. Vernon Square Metro and Gallery Place Metro and has plenty of on-street meter parking. Be sure not to miss the current exhibition, Informed Design, an inspired blend of fine art, architecture and interior design.

The record heat in DC didn't keep art lovers away last night as 600 people rsvp for the opening of Informed Design at Long View Gallery. The installations by architects Ernesto Santalla & David Jameson established a gallery within a gallery effect and handsomely defined a chic edgy look for new art collectors.

"Informed Design" expounds on the role of art objects in the context of interior design and architecture. Rather than neglecting the gallery space as merely a support to the works of art that hang in it, "Informed Design" demonstrates how artworks can shape an interior or interact with space offering the viewer a heightened aesthetic experience.

Long View Gallery announces the upcoming exhibition “Informed Design,” opening on July 8 and running through August 1. “Informed Design” strives to expound on the role of art objects within the context of interior design and architecture. This exhibition will feature a sampling of the inventory in our newly launched corporate art consulting branch, as well as two architectural design vignettes by leading D.C. architects Ernesto Santalla and David Jameson.

In contrast to typical gallery shows in which pieces hang on blank white walls, “Informed Design” demonstrates how art can influence or interact with an interior. “Informed Design” aims to explore the relationship between art and architecture, and argues that exceptional works of art establish dialogues with their surroundings. The show will encompass a wide variety of abstract paintings and low relief sculptures by artists on our corporate art consulting roster. These artists include: Joan Konkel, Anne Marchand, Victoria Cowles, Steve Griffin, Patricia Burns, Wanda Wainsten, and Susan Finsen.

Local architects Ernesto M. Santalla of Studio Santalla and David Jameson of David Jameson Architect Inc. will install site-specific vignettes to accompany our artwork selections. Santalla and Jameson both consider art as the hub of their respective design processes.

Educated in the Bauhaus style of architecture, Santalla’s vignette adopts the unique curatorial approach of selecting artworks according to which pieces best utilize the space. His vignette incorporates a site-specific installation by Barbara Josephs Liotta, as well as a series of paintings by Ralph Turturro that echo the texture of gallery’s stone pillars. Specifically created for “Informed Design,” Liotta will unveil a 20-foot tall installation composed of white marble stones and matching tie cord that float against a black wall. She describes her work as “stripping away the superfluous and the decorative. I strive for a sort of essence, a clarity that will allow the work grace but not prettiness, rhythm but not contrivance, balance but not inertness. I strive to animate, not merely inhabit a space.” The work should resonate both with the architecture of the space it occupies, and with the materials from which it is constructed.”

Jameson’s vignette similarly allows the physical gallery space to dictate his design. Inspired by the raw feel of the exposed brick and concrete, he has selected work by artists that complement the industrial look of the gallery. According to Jameson, “conceptually, we are attempting to create an installation that stitches together a tectonic experience formed by pressures of the space with an art experience positioned within the added tectonic elements.” Displaying works by celebrated artists Steve Cushner, Mary Early, James Huckenphaler and Jackie Hoysted, Jameson is creating a gallery within the gallery by installing pillars, echoing the existing concrete beams, to act as walls. Not only will the architectural design choices enhance the interior of the gallery, they will also heighten the experience of viewing the artwork that adorns them, further elaborating on the importance of art objects in interiors.

About Ernesto Santalla
Cuban-born architect Ernesto Santalla has contributed to the changing skyline of Washington, D.C. and worked on projects in the U.S., Puerto Rico and Europe. A registered architect and LEED accredited professional, Ernesto practices architecture, interior design, and graphic design at his firm, Studio Santalla, Inc., located in Georgetown, Washington, D.C. Ernesto is also a fine art photographer and a regular contributor to Washington Life Magazine and The Washington Blade.

About David Jameson
David Jameson, FAIA founded his eponymous architectural studio in 1998 upon a rigorous commitment to design excellence and client service. Since then, his firm has been recognized nationally and internationally with over 150 design awards and featured in over nearly 200 design publications including Architectural Record, The Architectural Review, and Architectural Digest. London based Wallpaper magazine recognized the firm as one of four US based architecture firms to follow in its 2010 Fabulous 40 issue. This past spring Architectural Digest named David to their AD100 roster, a listing of the top 100 architects and designer’s worldwide. In academia, Jameson is an adjunct faculty at his alma mater Virginia Tech (91’) and is a guest critic at Yale and Columbia.

Art Abounds as Summer Rolls In Crystal City

The Crystal City Business Improvement District (BID) announces the opening of a new art exhibit at 2011 Crystal Drive. In collaboration with Congressman Jim Moran’s office, 68 pieces from An Artistic Discovery: The Congressional Art Competition for the 8th District of Virginia are located in Crystal City and available for public viewing.

“We are happy to partner with Congressman Moran’s office to put these works on display in Crystal City,” Angela Fox, President and CEO of the Crystal City BID. “Art transforms spaces and places, which is what we are committed to in Crystal City. This show joins our Art Walls and other exhibits in celebrating that dedication.”

The 68 pieces hung at 2011 Crystal Drive are a sampling of the 150 submissions received from students throughout the 8th District of Virginia. The remaining submissions are on display at the Arlington Art Center.

Art enthusiasts can take a short walk from An Artistic Discovery to 2231 Crystal Drive to see the Luminous exhibit by artist Anne Marchand. Luminous opened in March and, by popular demand, has been extended through July 30. Inspired by the combination of colorful images taken by the Hubble Space Telescope and mystical poetry, Marchand’s use of mixed media, acrylic and incorporation of texture and translucent passages of paint help create a moving and reflective exhibition.

Artistic Discovery and Luminous add to a growing collection in Crystal City’s Art Walls gallery. Visitors can take a stroll around Crystal City to view other notable works from local artists that are installed throughout Crystal City. These works infuse color and character into the area while leading to fun, whimsical, and interesting spaces for Crystal City’s guests, residents, and employees.

Finally, for the remainder of the summer “Bucky Art” statues will be on display on the streets of Crystal City. Inspired by R. Buckminster Fuller’s geodesic dome, the statues add to the excitement surrounding Arena Stage’s upcoming presentation of R. Buckminster Fuller: THE HISTORY (and Mystery) OF THE UNIVERSE. PROJECT RENEW FEATURES CHILDREN'S DRAWINGS AT MONTGOMERY COLLEGE

Vietnamese children’s drawings of bombs and mines threat to be shown in international exhibition

Quang Tri, Vietnam & Silver Spring, Maryland, U.S.A – In a partnership with Amnesty International USA, twenty paintings drawn by children who live in unexploded ordnance (UXO) affected areas in Quang Tri Province, Vietnam will be shown in an April 2010 exhibition and during the community-wide Amnesty International Human Rights Art Festival on April 23-25 weekend. http://www.humanrightsartfestival.com/

The CHILDREN’S BOMBS AND MINES DRAWINGS will be exhibited from 12 to 26 April in Montgomery College Cafritz Hallway Gallery, 930 King Street, Takoma Park/Silver Spring, Maryland USA. The exhibition is free and open to the public.

These paintings are some of several thousand entries in a “bombs and mine drawing” contest for Vietnamese children living around the former DMZ in Quang Tri Province, central Vietnam. The contest is one of many risk education activities that are part of an effort by Project RENEW – a humanitarian mine action program – to reduce accidents and injuries from explosive ordnance. These paintings, to be given away for a $50 donation, will help Project RENEW continue its efforts to reinforce risk education and safety messages in central Vietnam.

The twenty drawings to be displayed in the exhibition stand out among hundreds of entries submitted from children enrolled in 25 elementary and secondary schools in Cam Lo District. The purpose of such contests is to help students express their creativity with ideas about an environment free from UXO. This also helps to educate children about the dangers of UXO, while reinforcing their responsibilities as part of the community to join in a common effort to disseminate risk education and safety messages. A total of 5,632 paintings were submitted, presenting different topics on dangerous behaviors leading to UXO incidents, the dangers of UXO and other legacies of the war, and the value of risk education outreach activities at the local level.

It is hoped that such displays of children’s paintings, expressing their ideas and views of the threat of bombs and mines through their own eyes, will raise awareness of exhibit goers as well as the general public about the lingering impact of UXO in Vietnam, which has claimed more than 100,000 casualties since the war ended in 1975.

ABOUT PROJECT RENEW'S MINE RISK EDUCATION PROGRAM

Since August 2001, when Project RENEW was launched as a partnership between the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund (VVMF) and the Quang Tri Province Department of Foreign Affairs, their top priority has been to prevent accidents, injuries and deaths among children and adults caused by thousands of pieces of unexploded ordnance remaining in the DMZ area since the end of the war. An urgent focus of their work is on cleanup – safe removal and destruction of cluster munitions, mortars, artillery shells, grenade, mines and other lethal debris – by trained and equipped Vietnamese teams of Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) specialists. Project RENEW currently has four teams working every day at known contamination sites in Quang Tri Province.

However, until the teams can schedule on-site responses and cleanup, prioritized by level of danger, urgency, location and proximity to homes, schools, and community activities, in the meantime it is critical that children and adults understand the nature of this threat and how to take responsibility for their own safety.

Through educational activities, community information programs, and media outreach, residents of the province are taught how to identify dangerous ordnance, what to do to protect themselves and their children, and how to report findings of UXO so that EOD teams can respond and remove the danger. The EOD teams depend on the community for active involvement and support in determining the urgency of the teams’ taskings and setting their scheduling priorities. They call it the Community Reporting Network (CRN). It was established by Project RENEW as part of their Mine Risk Education program, in partnership with the Youth Union.

The Youth Union is a grassroots organization made up of young volunteers from high school age to mid-twenties who are trained to go out into the villages and neighborhoods and teach the people how to be safe, what to do when they discover UXO.

YU members help Project RENEW staff to organize community meetings, school presentations, performance and entertainment events, parades and campouts – and painting and drawing contests – to maintain a high level of public awareness and safety vigilance. This combination of public awareness and community responsibility to report findings of UXO to RENEW’s disposal teams has helped bring about a measurable reduction in the number of accidents, injuries and deaths in recent years.

My partner exhibitor, Project RENEW is showing children's drawing from a “bombs and mine drawing” contest, one of the many risk education activities within Project RENEW’s integrated Mine Risk Education in Quang Tri Province, Vietnam. In partnership with Cam Lo District Youth Union (Vietnam), the Mine Risk Education program launched a Painting and Drawing Contest. The purpose is to help students express their creativity with ideas about an environment free from explosive remnants of war (ERW). Crystal City (Arlington, VA) - The Crystal City Business Improvement District (BID) in partnership with Vornado/Charles E. Smith is proud to announce a new art exhibition at 2231 Crystal Drive featuring the work of Washington, DC-based artist Anne Marchand. Consisting of eight large canvases, the Luminous exhibition—where art and the universe merge—will be on view until April 26, 2010.

“We are very excited that Vornado created an artistic opportunity that also showcases their newest lobby renovation,” said Angela Fox, President/CEO of the Crystal City BID. “This collaboration is another bold example of arts, color, and culture in Crystal City that visitors, workers and residents of the area have come to expect and love.”

Inspired by the combination of colorful images taken by the Hubble Space Telescope and mystical poetry, Marchand creates patterns of movement that reflect the forces of the heavens. Gestures, lines, and energetic strokes are transformed into worlds of color and exciting arcs of movement that dance across the canvases taking viewers on a journey through the cosmos into darkness, light, and back to the rhythms of the natural world. Marchand’s use of mixed media, acrylic and incorporation of texture and translucent passages of paint help create a moving and reflective exhibition.

Luminous is part of the Crystal City BID’s ARTFUL program. This new exhibition builds on the success of previous Crystal Art projects which have demonstrated the power that art can add to public spaces. Luminous is located on the recently renovated ground floor public concourse of 2231 Crystal Drive adding exceptional color to a beautiful new space. The Crystal City BID is responsible for changing how people see and perceive Crystal City, and art remains a critical means of achieving this goal by adding color, interest and conversation to the streets, sidewalks and public spaces of Crystal City.

The Crystal City Business Improvement District (BID) is a public-private partnership established in April 2006 to promote the vibrant Crystal City business, retail, restaurant and residential community. The Mid-Atlantic New Painting exhibition is a biennial juried competition highlighting new developments in painting throughout the mid-Atlantic region. Artists from Delaware, District of Columbia, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and West Virginia are featured. At least $2000 in awards is distributed at each exhibition.

Life is swirling these days and I am wondering if social media and the internet have hoodwinked me into thinking I'm on top of everything. What to do when the to do list has taken over? Well, I'm about to depart on a pilgrimage of sorts, away from the land of communications to a zone of emptiness. There, in that still point, is the sweet spot of creativity where brow can be unfurrowed, relax into the moment and take in the infinite array of fabulous beings in this jewelbox of a planet. I don't think I'm unique in the urge for quietude. Artists vacillate between the need for plenty and the need for solitude. It's quite a balancing act and one which allows for ample training time.

If you find yourself yearning for a quiet spot in the midst of plenty, take a mini break from the world of communications (or a longer one if you can). Even a 20 minute walk or a tea and cookie break can feel luxurious for those of us chained to the go-go world. A trip to an art gallery or museum could be just the shift you need.
